What is IV sedation Dentistry

IV sedation dentistry uses calming medication delivered through a small IV line to create a deep state of relaxation during treatment. It works quickly and helps patients stay calm, comfortable, and free from anxiety.

This sedation option can be used for any dental procedure, surgical or non-surgical, and is ideal for patients with high anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still, or those needing longer appointments.

You remain conscious but very relaxed, able to respond to simple instructions. Most patients remember little of the procedure. Throughout your visit, trained professionals closely monitor your breathing, heart rate, and oxygen levels for complete safety.

IV sedation makes it possible to receive the care you need in a calm and stress-free environment.

How Does IV Sedation Work?

The IV sedation process is smooth, predictable, and designed to maximize comfort. Although each plan is personalized, the general steps remain consistent for all types of treatment.

1. Pre-Sedation Evaluation

Your dentist reviews your medical history, current medications, and treatment plan to determine the safest and most effective sedation approach for your needs. This is also the time to ask questions and discuss any concerns about anxiety or past dental experiences.

2. Starting the Sedation

A small IV line is gently placed, usually in your arm or hand. Sedation medication is administered, which begins to take effect within minutes. You will feel calm, relaxed, and detached from the activity around you. Many patients describe the sensation as drifting in and out of light sleep.

3. Your Dental Procedure

While you are sedated, your dentist completes your treatment. IV sedation can be used for any procedure, including:

  • Cleanings

  • Fillings and crowns

  • Extractions

  • Root canals

  • Implant placement

  • Full mouth restorations

Because you are fully relaxed, your dentist is often able to complete multiple procedures in one visit, making IV sedation ideal for patients who prefer fewer appointments or have complex treatment needs.

4. Continuous Monitoring

A trained provider monitors your vital signs throughout your appointment to ensure your comfort and safety from start to finish. Your sedation level can also be adjusted at any time through the IV line.

5. Recovery

When your procedure is complete, the sedation medication is stopped and you gradually return to full alertness. Most patients feel drowsy for a short period and will need a responsible adult to drive them home. Any post-procedure instructions will be reviewed with both you and your escort.
